Who can diagnose autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that presents very differently across individuals. There is no blood work or medical test that can be used to diagnose autism. As such, diagnosing autism requires a formal developmental evaluation by a trained specialist who has expertise in autism and neurodevelopment. Examples of trained specialists qualified to conduct such evaluations may include licensed clinical psychologists, developmental pediatricians, nurse practitioners with specialty in developmental medicine, psychiatrists, and/or pediatric neurologists.
